The Face of Connecticut Campaign calls for $43 million in new annual funding to augment the state's investment in Connecticut's urban neighborhoods and rural communities.

The Face of Connecticut Campaign is calling for the state to increase its current investments in protecting natural lands, farmland, and historic neighborhoods to enable our communities to address the rapid loss of these resources while there is still time. While we are calling for a total $100 million annual investment, it is important to note that this total includes about $57 million in current expenditures – funds that have been included in recent bonding packages. We are proposing approximately $43 million in “new”, additional funding, which is crucial to meet very urgent needs.

The chart below delineates the breakdown between existing and new funding in our request.

The $57 million in current funding includes about $30 million in average annual earmarks for projects that would address the objectives of our campaign. While these earmarked projects are very important, we recommend that the funding for these initiatives be added to the relevant state programs and not be allocated to specific projects in the budget for two reasons. First, if a specific project is not able to be completed, the funding cannot be spent on any other related program project. Second, in some cases, it weakens the state’s negotiating position with landowners or property developers to publicize an exact “price” (authorization) for a purchase or restoration project.
